Our  Tomorrow's Audience report* by Indigo-Ltd in partnership with Spektrix showcased the importance of being able to bring first-time audience members back.

Respecting a customer's preferred method of contact - whether it's email, phone calls, or direct mail - means you're more likely to catch their attention and encourage engagement.

Use this recipe to build trust and strengthen the relationship with your audience, increasing their willingness to engage further. Preferences also help you comply with data protection regulations and demonstrate a commitment to your customers' rights and privacy.

Outcomes

  • Communicate with contacts who want to hear from you by maintaining accurate data.
  • Increase engagement by communicating through preferred channels.
  • Improve email open rates and enhance deliverability with fewer spam issues.

Ingredients

Contact preferences: ways of gathering information about your customers and how they would like their personal data (email address, postal address, phone number, etc.) to be used

Customer lists: lists of contacts from your database, used for audience segmentation

Global segments: segments available to be used across all customer lists

 Prep

Create or review contact preferences to ensure effectiveness. Look at the emails and content you send and ask yourself, based on your preference wording, "Is this what I would expect to receive?"

A good contact preference:

  • Specifies the preferred communication method (email, phone, direct mail, etc.)
  • Outlines the types of communications (newsletters, announcements, offers, etc)
  • Indicates the frequency of communications

Cook

  1. Edit and group your contact preferences in the Spektrix Settings interface.
  2. Archive your old preferences instead of deleting them, if you are making changes.
  3. Link your email contact preferences to Dotdigital so unsubscribes and resubscribes sync between Spektrix and Dotdigital, keeping your data up to date.
  4. Capture your customers' contact preferences. This happens automatically during checkout, and you can also capture them through a website sign-up form.
  5. Set up a global segment for each contact preference to save time when building new customer lists.

Bon appétit!
